WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE GARDEN

JANUARY 15

Rocky’s Stone & More delivered twelve yards of beautiful (to me, at least) garden soil last week to fill our 24 beds. Fortunately, when Jim saw the eight huge soil bags lined up in the parking lot, he suggested we contact our yard guys (Rivera’s Landscaping) to see if they could help. I had emptied a bag myself - 1 ½ yards - but it took me about five hours, so I was very happy to stand by and observe as four guys emptied all the bags in two hours!! We did not have enough soil, so they will be delivering another load and filling the rest of the beds next week.

Our first garden work day was Saturday, the 14th. Four volunteers - Ed and Carolyn Grune, and Joan and Alicia Capps - showed up to plant garlic, onion and leeks. Thanks for your help!

We will start putting the compost bins together this week, so please save your bagged leaves and grass clippings (if they haven’t been treated with herbicides.) I will be planting a couple of the beds in snap peas in the next two weeks. Jim and I will also be working on covering some of the beds with removable frost covers so that we can start some seedlings early. We will have another work day next month to plant potatoes and asparagus. Thank you, Lord, for blessing our efforts to feed the hungry!

IN THE HOME GARDEN:

Time to make sure the frost-killed vegetation in the flower beds is cut down and removed to the compost heap. Then we need to haul in some more mulch and layer it around the remaining plants to help them through the next cold snap. Rutabagas, carrots, leeks and onions are doing well in January’s warmer weather. I will start planting seeds for our spring crops to grow indoors this week.
