WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE GARDENThrough May 30Our Welcome to the Garden event helped our church congregation understand our purpose and practices. The visitors enjoyed seeing our progress, taking home free marigolds and sunflowers, and several may become new helpers! Our thanks to the volunteers who prepared the garden for visitors, and to the church maintenance team who built the new path and added fresh mulch to all the walkways around the beds. We have donated 47 lbs of fresh produce to the Mansfield Mission food bank this spring! Our volunteers have taken 23 lbs of vegetables home to their families. IN THE HOME GARDENWe have stopped harvesting asparagus, to allow the roots to grow new stems. Kale continues to produce, onions are the size of baseballs, cucumbers are just starting to produce nice 6-inch cukes, and the tomatoes keep climbing and are loaded with fruit. Spring peas were beat up by the storms, and had to be removed, but the squash are coming on! Be on the lookout for aphids, caterpillar and slug damage, cucumber beetles, and evidence of squash bugs. Continue to prune and train up your tomatoes and cucumbers vertically as we showed you last week. Squash and sweet potato vines also do well when grown vertically. Remember to plant lots of flowers to attract pollinators!
